US to Lourenco Marques NYC 3c Prexie GRIPSHOLM Prisoner Exchange LIFE MAG 1943
Description :
A spectacular censored Prexie cover, addressed to the wife of Mydans, interned as a civilian prisoner of war in the Philippines and China. An exchange of these people along with some military captives was arranged through the Red Cross, and the m/v "Gripsholm", with a Swedish captain, completed the process of returning these people to the US. The letter was sent from the mother or daughter of Mrs. Shirley Smith Mydans, the wife of Carl Mydans, Life Magazine's photographer in the Far East during World War II. The sender addressed the envelope to Mrs. Mydans, "Repatriate from Philippine Islands", who was to depart from Lourenco Marques, Mozambique, c/o of the New York Postmaster. Dated March 14, 1943. Only a US censor tape. Whether the postmaster was able to forward the letter before the ship departed from Africa is not indicated in any way. The Mydans were first interned at Santo Tomas University in Manila, and then in Shanghai.
