France - 1857 Entire letter sent from Constantinople to Marseille on the SS Cydnus, a Messageries Maritimes vessel built in 1856 and which operated until 1875. 'Cydnus' circular cancels with clear 1857 date and a 'PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANEE' boxed cachet in red ink. Postage paid with 40c and 10c Empire Franc stamps, the 10c damaged at the corner and the 40c colour changed by oxidation. Fine attractive and very scarce item.
